If you are reading this with your heart beating a little faster, I want you to know something first: almost every woman who walks into my studio has never done this before. As a San Diego boudoir photographer, I hear the same quiet questions again and again. What if I’m awkward? What do I wear? Is my body really ready for this? So let me take you by the hand and walk you through exactly what happens during your first session of fine art boudoir photography in San Diego, hour by hour, in our private Bankers Hill studio.
I created these sessions as fine art, not a quick photoshoot. Every image is shaped by soft, sculpted light and careful posing, so your portraits feel timeless, the kind of pieces you’ll still love looking at in twenty years. My hope is that you’ll leave the studio feeling lighter than when you arrived, and that when you see your portraits, you’ll finally see what I saw all along: a woman worth celebrating, exactly as she is.
Before Your Session: It Begins With a Conversation
Your experience starts long before the camera comes out. We begin with a relaxed consultation, where you tell me a little about yourself and why you’re thinking about boudoir now. Maybe it’s a milestone birthday, a gift for your partner, a celebration of a body that has carried you through so much, or simply a quiet promise to yourself. Some of my clients are brides-to-be, and if that’s you, you’ll love reading about our bridal boudoir sessions.
We’ll talk through the mood you’re drawn to, soft and romantic or deeper and more dramatic, and any worries you’re carrying. There’s no pressure here, just a chance to dream a little together.
What to Bring
- Two or three pieces that make you feel like yourself: lingerie, a bodysuit, an oversized sweater, a partner’s button-down shirt.
- Anything meaningful, like a piece of jewelry, a ring or a letter.
- Loose, soft clothing to wear to the studio, so there are no marks on your skin.
- Water and a snack. Breaks are part of the plan.
And if your drawer feels empty, please don’t worry. Our studio wardrobe is there for you, with delicate fabrics, robes and pieces chosen to flatter every body. Many of my clients mix a few of their own favorites with something from the studio.
Hour One: Hair, Makeup and Settling In
When you arrive at our studio in Bankers Hill, just steps from Balboa Park, the first hour belongs entirely to you. A talented, professional hair and makeup artist prepares you, softly and beautifully, in a way that still looks like you on your most radiant day. You don’t need to arrive with any of it done.
This hour is about so much more than lashes and curls. It’s when your shoulders drop and your breath slows. We talk, we laugh, and we go through the outfits you brought together. By the time you look in the mirror, most women tell me the nerves have quietly turned into something closer to excitement.
Hours Two and Three: How a San Diego Boudoir Photographer Guides You Through Every Set
This is where the art happens, and it happens slowly. I never hand you a camera-ready pose and step back. I guide every single pose, from the tilt of your chin to the curve of your fingers, so you never have to wonder what to do with your hands. Often I’ll show you the pose myself first. Yes, I’ll look a little silly. That’s part of the fun.
Our studio has several sets, and together we’ll choose the ones that fit the story you want to tell:
- The bedroom set, with a white canopy bed, soft linens and gentle light. Many first-timers like to begin here, because it feels the most natural.
- The vanity set, for quiet, reflective moments that feel like a glimpse into your private world.
- The dark and moody set, where shadow and sculpted light turn your curves into something painterly and bold.
- The shower set, sensual and intimate, with water and glass.
- The wet set, for skin that glistens and images with real drama.
You don’t have to do every set, and you’re always in control of how covered or how bare you feel comfortable being. We change outfits between sets, take breaks whenever you need one, and I’ll show you a few images on the back of the camera along the way. That moment, when you see yourself and quietly say “that’s me?”, is one of my favorite parts of what I do.
Three hours might sound like a lot. But it’s exactly what lets this feel unhurried. Nobody is rushing you, and the most beautiful images almost always come in the final hour, once you’ve stopped thinking about the camera altogether.
After Your Session: Seeing Yourself as Art
Within a week of your shoot, we’ll meet on Zoom for your private viewing and ordering appointment. You’ll see your images fully finished, and we’ll choose together the ones that will become heirlooms: albums to hold in your hands and wall art to live with every day. You can join from your couch, in your softest clothes, and take all the time you need.
Many women tell me this is the moment the whole experience truly lands. Seeing yourself this way, confident and soft and strong, is something you carry with you long after the session ends.
Your Nervous Questions, Answered
I’ve never done anything like this. Is that okay?
More than okay. Most of my clients have never been professionally photographed at all, let alone for boudoir. You don’t need experience. That’s my job, and I’ll be with you every step.
What if I’m awkward in front of the camera?
Everyone feels awkward for the first few minutes. Truly, everyone. Because I guide every pose, you never have to “perform.” You simply follow along, breathe, and let yourself be seen. By the second set, most women are laughing and suggesting ideas of their own.
My body isn’t “boudoir-ready.” Should I wait?
Please don’t wait for a version of yourself that may never feel finished. There is no such thing as a boudoir-ready body, only your body, right now, in this chapter of your life. I photograph women of every shape, size and age, and I’ll pose you in ways that honor exactly who you are.
Who will see my photos?
Your images are yours. Your session happens in a private studio, and your viewing happens privately with me on Zoom. Your portraits are made for you and whoever you choose to share them with.
What should I wear if I don’t own lingerie?
You don’t need to shop for anything. Our studio wardrobe has pieces for every body, and some of the most stunning images come from a simple sheet, a sweater or nothing more than beautiful light.
