Timeless fine art maternity portraits in a private studio
San Diego Maternity Photographer
At Portraits By Z, maternity photography is fine art. As a San Diego maternity photographer working exclusively in a private studio, Zeynep creates timeless, elegant portraits of you and your bump. Each one is sculpted with studio light and styled with care, made to look as beautiful framed on your wall in twenty years as it does today.
Your session is a one-on-one luxury experience from start to finish. A talented, professional hair and makeup artist gets you ready, you choose from our collection of modern maternity gowns, and Zeynep gently guides every pose, all in our studio in Bankers Hill, near Balboa Park. You don’t need any modeling experience. Just arrive, and we’ll take care of everything else.
Fine art maternity portraits in a private San Diego studio
Many maternity sessions take place outdoors. They have a relaxed, lifestyle feel shaped by the weather and the light of the day. Ours are intentionally different. In the studio, every element is chosen. The light is shaped to follow the curve of your bump and the lines of your figure, the backgrounds are simple and uncluttered, and nothing competes with you. The result is portraiture that feels sculptural and timeless rather than of-the-moment.
We photograph in rich color and classic black and white, often both in one session. Modern, elegant gowns, softly draped fabric, dramatic silhouettes and quiet, intimate close-ups all have a place. Every image is carefully lit, posed and retouched so it can be printed large and treasured as art, in an heirloom album or on your wall.
A one-on-one, full-service experience
Many expecting moms tell us they don’t feel especially confident in front of a camera right now. That’s completely normal, and it’s why your session is personal from the very first call. Zeynep works with you one-on-one, from your phone consultation to your Zoom viewing. Together you’ll plan your outfits, your look, the mood you love and anything you’re nervous about.
We are the only full-service maternity studio near central San Diego, with hair and makeup, wardrobe, posing guidance and heirloom albums all under one roof. Zeynep knows the most flattering poses for every stage of pregnancy and every body. She’ll show you exactly how to stand, where to place your hands and where to look, so you can relax and simply enjoy the experience.
When to book: 26 to 34 weeks
The best time for your studio session is between 26 and 34 weeks, around seven to eight months of pregnancy. By then your bump is beautifully defined, and you’ll still be comfortable through a full session of posing and outfit changes. Scheduling before the final weeks also helps you avoid the swelling that can come late in pregnancy.
Every pregnancy is different, so we’ll help you choose the right week on your consultation call. We recommend reaching out as soon as you know you’d like a session, so we can reserve your date and leave time to plan. A few tips while you wait: try to avoid tan lines in the weeks before your shoot, and on the day, arrive in loose, comfortable clothing so nothing leaves marks on your skin.
Modern maternity gowns and wardrobe
Wardrobe is a big part of a fine art portrait, and you don’t have to shop for it alone. Our studio has a collection of modern maternity gowns you’re welcome to use during your session. They come in elegant, contemporary styles that photograph beautifully in studio light. You’ll also find soft robes, sheer fabrics and delicate lingerie pieces for more intimate images.
You’re also welcome to bring your own favorites. On your consultation call, we’ll talk through the colors and textures that suit the look you want, from soft neutrals and whites to rich, deep tones that glow against a studio backdrop. If you’re planning partial nude or nude images, we’ll tell you what to bring, such as lace underwear, a strapless bra or pasties. For more planning tips, read our maternity photoshoot guide.
Professional hair and makeup, then a fully guided session
Professional hair and makeup are included in your session. Our talented, professional hair and makeup artist works right here at the studio’s dedicated hair and makeup station, so there’s no rushing to a salon and no worrying about doing your own makeup at home. You simply arrive, settle in and let us pamper you. Your artist creates a polished look that photographs beautifully under studio light and still looks like you, just glowing.
Then your shoot begins: two and a half hours of shoot time, with Zeynep guiding each pose and outfit and adjusting the light as you go. The pace is unhurried, so there’s time to breathe, change looks and enjoy the experience as much as the portraits we create together.
Partners and little ones
Your pregnancy is a family story, and your partner and children are welcome to join you for part of your session. A few portraits together, a hand on the bump or a toddler’s first cuddle with the baby-to-be can become some of the most treasured images in your collection. We usually take family portraits at the beginning or end of the session, since young children have short attention spans. It helps to have someone ready to take them home afterward, so you can relax into your individual portraits, especially if you’re planning intimate or nude images. There’s no extra charge for including your partner or children.

Maternity boudoir and intimate fine art portraits
For some moms, maternity portraits are about something more personal: honoring the strength and beauty of your changing body, just for you. Our maternity boudoir and intimate fine art portraits are elegant and tasteful, and you decide your comfort level at every step. You might choose soft lingerie or sheer fabric, a dramatic silhouette, or semi-nude or nude portraits. These are often in black and white, which beautifully highlights the curve of your bump and the grace of your figure.
The privacy of the studio makes it easy to relax, and careful lighting, thoughtful posing and meticulous composition keep every image artful and dignified. You can also combine styles in one session, with elegant gown portraits to share with family and a few intimate images to treasure for yourself.

Frequently
Asked
Questions
What week should you schedule a maternity photo shoot?
Usually, you should book a session between 26 and 34 weeks, which is around 7-8 months of pregnancy.
During this time, your bump will be showing well for pregnancy boudoir photography, and you’ll be able to pose comfortably during the shoot, regardless of whether you prefer fine art, black and white, silhouette, or even nude maternity photography.
How much does a maternity session cost?
Your maternity session starts with a $350 retainer, or just $99 when you book during your phone consultation. The retainer covers professional hair and makeup and your photo session. Prints and products are not included. You’ll choose those at your viewing and ordering appointment on Zoom, within a week of your shoot.
Collections start at $699. Some clients stay at that level, while most invest more. What you spend depends on the album you choose, how many images you want, and whether you add wall art or digital files. We’ll walk you through every option on your free consultation call.
What should I wear in a boudoir maternity photography session?
For maternity boudoir photography, you’ll want to wear something that makes you feel beautiful and confident.
Consider a lingerie set, a robe, or a modern gown that shows off your baby bump. Our studio offers an impressive collection of maternity photography dresses that you are more than welcome to use during your shoot in San Diego. Comfort and confidence are key, so be sure to choose something that makes you feel your best!
How do I prepare for maternity photography?
The first step is to schedule a consultation with your maternity photographer to discuss outfits, what to bring and what to expect on the day of the shoot.
Our sessions include hair and make-up and outfits designed for full-color or black and white maternity photography, depending on your preferences, so you don’t have to stress about getting ready before you come.
Why should I book a maternity photo session?
Booking a maternity photo shoot is a great way to commemorate and celebrate this special time in your life.
As one of the leading studio for maternity photography in the San Diego area, our goal is to capture those lasting memories of your pregnancy and the anticipation of your new baby. With your photos, you’ll be able to look back and remember the joy and excitement you felt. Also, you’ll have beautiful pictures of you and your baby bump to share with family and friends.
What is nude maternity photography?
Semi-nude or nude maternity photography is a stunning and artistic tribute to the female form throughout pregnancy. It serves as a deeply personal memento of this extraordinary time in a mother’s life and can be a sophisticated, elegant addition to any home decor.
Usually done in black and white, this type of pregnancy photography accentuates the natural contours and grace of a pregnant woman’s body. The focus is often on the belly’s curves, the body’s overall shape, and the gentle form of the breasts. Each photograph is crafted with finesse—careful lighting, thoughtful posing, and meticulous composition ensure that the images are tasteful and dignified.
How to shoot a maternity silhouette?
As experts in pregnancy boudoir photography across San Diego, we’ve found that maternity silhouette photography is incredibly flattering and truly captures the graceful contours of the belly. This style falls under the category of fine art maternity photography, which is particularly effective in highlighting the elegance of a woman’s figure.
A great technique for creating truly fine art maternity photography is to have your subject stand sideways. The intense backlight will sharply illuminate their outline, crafting a dramatic silhouette against a bright background. This approach not only showcases the beauty of pregnancy but also adds an artistic flair to your photos.
What color is best for pregnancy boudoir photography?
While neutrals, whites, and pastels are wonderful choices, there’s something truly timeless about black and white photography. The contrast in maternity black and white photography beautifully captures the depth of emotions associated with pregnancy. These classic images not only highlight the strength and beauty of this special time but also serve as cherished reminders of the moments before welcoming your child into the world.
